Elaine Primary School

Elaine Education Centre (EEC)

Welcome to the Elaine Education Centre (EEC), our specialist, resourced provision dedicated to supporting children with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. The EEC is funded for ten pupils, all of whom have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

In the EEC, we believe that every child deserves an education without labels. Grounded in our trauma-informed approach, we provide a highly structured, nurturing, and therapeutic environment where children feel safe, regulated, and ready to learn. Our ultimate goal is to remove barriers to learning, build emotional resilience, and support pupils to successfully navigate their academic and personal development.

Our Curriculum Intent:

The curriculum in the EEC is designed with the highest expectations, ensuring that pupils access a broad, balanced, and ambitious curriculum that mirrors the mainstream offer while being adapted to meet individual developmental starting points.

Our curriculum intent is structured around three core pillars:

  • Academic Ambition: Securing fundamental skills in reading, writing, and mathematics, ensuring that cognitive barriers are systematically addressed through adaptive teaching.
  • Relational and Emotional Regulation: Explicitly teaching the executive functioning, self-regulation, and co-regulation skills children need to manage their emotions and behaviour.
  • Independence and Life Skills: Equipping pupils with the communication, social, and practical skills required to foster long-term independence and active citizenship.

Implementation:

To translate our intent into daily practice, the EEC utilises a range of evidence-informed, specialist strategies:

  • Therapeutic, Low-Arousal Environment: The physical space of the EEC is meticulously designed to reduce cognitive load and sensory anxiety. It features structured learning stations, visual timetables, low-stimulus zones, and dedicated sensory spaces to facilitate emotional regulation.
  • Explicit Regulation Instruction: Children are taught to identify their emotional states and utilise personalised toolkits—such as concrete sensory resources and breathing exercises—to return to a regulated state of learning.
  • The Assess, Plan, Do, Review (APDR) Cycle: Every pupil’s progress is tracked using precise, small-step targets aligned directly to their EHCP objectives. Learning sequences are broken down into manageable chunks, utilising "I Do, We Do, You Do" modelling to secure success and prevent cognitive overload.
  • Total Communication Approach: To give every child a functional voice, we embed Speech, Language, and Communication (SLCN) support. This includes the use of visual scaffolding, speaking frames, and collaboration with our Speech and Language Therapist.

Our Graduated Reintegration Pathway

We do not view the EEC as an isolated setting, but as a bridge to wider community and academic success. Where appropriate, we implement a highly structured, tiered reintegration plan:

  1. Relational Integration: Pupils begin by participating in low-arousal, highly successful social times (such as assemblies, playtimes, or lunchtimes) with their mainstream peers, supported by familiar EEC staff.
  2. Shared Curriculum Projects: Pupils join their mainstream classes for specific, high-engagement subjects, such as our collaborative STEAM projects or global learning sequences.
  3. Academic Reintegration: As emotional regulation and academic stamina secure, sessions are gradually shifted to the mainstream classroom, with scaffolds carefully faded out to promote independent learning behaviours.

Impact:

The impact of our specialist provision is marked by exceptional progress from unique pupil starting points:

  • Sustained Emotional Regulation: Through the consistent use of restorative practice and de-escalation, the EEC has contributed to a transformational drop in positive handling incidents across the school, securing a calm and safe climate for all.
  • Exceptional Attendance and Engagement: Supported by the school’s Tiered Attendance System, pupils in the EEC demonstrate high rates of attendance.
  • Narrowed Attainment Gaps: Small-step tracking confirms that EEC pupils make progress against their individual milestones, transitioning to secondary school as confident, articulate, and self-aware individuals.
