Nurture & Pastoral (The DEN)
At Elaine Primary School, the DEN (Developing Education through Nurture) represents our specialist, school-led nurture and therapeutic provision. It is designed to provide targeted, evidence-based interventions for pupils whose social, emotional, or mental health needs present a barrier to their academic engagement and personal development.
While selected pupils access the DEN’s structured environment for bespoke sessions, nurture is not treated as an isolated, withdrawal-only service. Instead, it is an embedded, whole-school principle practiced by all staff. This systemic approach ensures that our gold-standard attachment and trauma-informed principles, validated by the Attachment and Trauma Sensitive School Award (ATSSA) at Gold Level, create a safe, predictable, and regulated climate across every classroom and transition point.
Our Tiered Nurture & Thrive Framework
To ensure early identification and precise support, we utilise a robust graduated response rooted in the Thrive Approach and diagnostic profiling:
- Whole-Class Thrive Profiles: Our qualified Thrive Practitioner leads termly, whole-class Thrive profiling for every class across the school. These profiles help teachers systematically identify collective emotional developmental needs, allowing them to embed targeted co-regulation strategies and emotional literacy routines directly into daily classroom practice.
- Individual Thrive Interventions: Where whole-class profiles identify pupils requiring deeper, targeted support, our practitioner conducts individual Thrive diagnostic assessments. These diagnostics generate highly personalised action plans with small-step targets, which are delivered through regular one-to-one sessions in the DEN to bridge emotional and developmental gaps.
- The Vulnerability Profile: We look beyond baseline compliance by using our bespoke whole-school Vulnerability Profile. This tool quantifies pupil risk across multiple domains—including family circumstances, mobility, and emotional wellbeing—to categorise needs into three clear tiers, ensuring that our pastoral resources are directed to where they will have the greatest impact.
Specialist Therapeutic Interventions
Outstanding pastoral care is much more than simply being warm to a child; it requires placing the pupil's developmental needs at the absolute centre of our operations. To build self-esteem, resilience, and self-regulation, the DEN delivers a structured curriculum of specialist, evidence-based interventions:
- Sand Play Therapy: This specialised, non-verbal therapeutic intervention allows children to express and process complex feelings, memories, and inner conflicts. By manipulating sand and miniature figures in a dedicated tray, children can safely externalise worries and explore resolutions under the guidance of trained staff, bypass verbal barriers, and reduce emotional distress.
- Draw to Talk & Art Therapy: Drawing and creative expression are utilised to allow children to externalise and process deep-seated anxieties or preoccupations that they may lack the verbal vocabulary to articulate. This provides a safe, non-threatening gateway for staff to understand and address hidden emotional barriers.
- Lego Therapy & Collaborative Play: Through structured, collaborative Lego build projects, children are explicitly taught social cognition skills. They practice sharing, turn-taking, and joint problem-solving, helping them build positive peer-to-peer relationships and navigate social interactions with confidence.
- Mindfulness, Yoga, and Sensory Co-regulation: We deliver structured mindfulness and yoga sessions to support children’s physical and mental wellbeing. Practised consistently for 5 to 10 minutes following busy transition periods—such as morning registration or re-entry after break and lunchtime—these sessions teach children how to calm their nervous systems, use the Zones of Regulation, and transition smoothly back into a state of cognitive focus ready for academic learning.
The Young Carers Programme
At Elaine, we are deeply committed to supporting our most resilient and vulnerable learners. We proactively identify, track, and support young carers across the school through our dedicated Young Carers Programme.
Led by our pastoral team, this initiative provides:
- Regular check-ins and structured respite sessions within the DEN to ensure young carers have a safe space to focus on their own wellbeing.
- Targeted academic support and homework flexibility to reduce cognitive load and protect their learning trajectory.
- Dedicated family engagement events designed to build strong relationships with parents and integrate families fully into school life, ensuring that these pupils are celebrated and never left behind.
Relational Co-education: Supporting Families
In alignment with our school-wide commitment to treating parents as true co-educators, the DEN acts as a vital bridge between school and home. Our Home School Support Worker (HSSW) and pastoral team use the DEN to host parenting workshops and provide families with practical, low-cost strategies, relational scripts, and regulation tools that can be easily replicated at home. This shared vocabulary and consistency between settings accelerates a child’s emotional development and stability.
