Elaine Primary School

French (MFL)

Our French curriculum is designed to broaden horizons, foster curiosity about other cultures, and equip every child with the linguistic confidence and communication skills necessary to succeed in modern Britain and the wider world.

To ensure our foundation subject curricula systematically build prerequisite knowledge, we utilise the  Language Angels scheme. This framework is meticulously aligned with national curriculum expectations, ensuring our pupils build substantive and disciplinary linguistic knowledge cumulatively over time. Through Language Angels, pupils transition progressively from early phonological awareness to complex grammatical manipulation and spontaneous oral and written expression.

Our French curriculum is structured around the sequential pathways of the Language Angels programme, which organises learning into three core linguistic pillars:

  1. Phonology (The Sounds of Language): We explicitly teach the relationship between French graphemes and phonemes using Language Angels' specialised pronunciation guides. This ensures children can decode and pronounce unfamiliar words accurately, building phonetic security from the start.
  2. Vocabulary (The Building Blocks): High-frequency vocabulary is mapped systematically across our units of study. We deliberately focus on Tier 2 academic vocabulary, highlighting etymological links between French and English root words to enhance overall literacy.
  3. Grammar (The Sentence Structure): Children learn to manipulate grammar systematically, including noun gender, pluralisation, and verb agreements. This structural approach ensures children move away from simple rote-memorisation and toward independent sentence construction.

Enrichment and Building Cultural Capital

We purposefully design our school calendar to celebrate language and build rich cultural capital for all of our families:

  • European Day of Languages: We celebrate the European Day of Languages annually. This whole-school event features pupil-led assembly presentations, interactive language taster sessions, and food tastings, turning language learning into a shared community celebration.
