DEMOCRACY

Democracy is a lived, daily experience at our school, driving our commitment to giving pupils a meaningful voice and genuine agency in their community. Our classroom agreements are co-constructed collaboratively by children and staff at the start of each academic year to establish respectful, harmonious, and supportive environments where everyone takes personal responsibility. Pupil leadership is structured through our democratically elected Junior Leadership Team, where children write formal proposals and deliver speeches to their peers before a class representative is chosen. Our Junior Leadership Team is highly active, taking direct responsibility for leading weekly whole-school assemblies and working alongside subject leaders to monitor and improve curriculum impact. Within our daily lessons, pupils use structured democratic tools—such as the Opinion Continuum to debate opposing viewpoints respectfully, and the Diamond Nine structure to co-operatively prioritise solutions to real-world problems. This ensures that every child knows their voice is valued, a standard reflected in our pupil surveys where children report exceptional levels of drive, safety, and trust.

THE RULE OF LAW

At Elaine, we teach our pupils to understand that school and societal laws are established to protect us, keep us safe, and ensure our collective wellbeing. The school’s Behaviour Policy is designed around clear, predictable expectations, ensuring a calm, safe, and orderly learning environment where everyone can flourish. Pupils are actively taught our core routines—including walking sensibly and silently in transitions and utilising our whole-school attention signals—which reduces cognitive load and promotes self-regulation. In every classroom, children co-construct a maximum of five class rules that align with our ELAINE values. When rules are broken, we implement a fair, transparent graduated response. Pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for their actions through restorative practice. Using restorative conversations, staff guide pupils through a reflective process: what happened, who was affected, and how we can make things right. This ensures our community is governed by a fair, consistent, and supportive framework where children feel safe and respected           

INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY

We believe that providing pupils with individual liberty is essential to cultivating self-belief, independence, and personal responsibility. Through our values-based education, we explicitly foster the value of Individuality, helping children understand that their unique characteristics and starting points are something to celebrate. In the classroom, teachers use a growth mindset approach, providing children with choices and supporting them to understand the consequences of those choices. Pupils are taught to take managed risks, develop personal resilience, and understand that challenges can be overcome. Our curriculum actively promotes pupil agency; for example, children engage in student voice surveys, shape school life through the Junior Leadership Team, and take ownership of their own emotional wellbeing using the Zones of Regulation. By equipping our pupils with the tools to self-advocate and co-construct their learning, we build confident, self-reliant citizens who value their personal freedom and respect the liberty of others

MUTUAL RESPECT

Relationships are the absolute heart of Elaine Primary School, a core principle validated by our gold-standard trauma-informed practices and the Attachment and Trauma Sensitive School Award. We explicitly teach and model mutual respect in every interaction, creating a school culture that is safe, respectful, and deeply inclusive. Our staff model positive relationships, relational warmth, and unconditional care, ensuring that children feel emotionally secure from day one. Mutual respect is woven through our curriculum, particularly in dialogic talk and collaborative learning sequences. Using structures like collaborative learning projects, pupils learn to work together, listen actively, and respect diverse viewpoints. Bullying, derogatory language, and discriminatory behaviours are never tolerated, and any incidents are dealt with swiftly and restoratively, reinforcing a shared commitment to dignity and respect for all.

TOLERANCE OF THOSE OF DIFFERENT FAITHS AND BELIEFS

At Elaine, we view our differences as a source of strength and enrichment. We explicitly teach our pupils to understand, appreciate, and celebrate different faiths, cultures, and beliefs. Our broad and balanced curriculum includes dedicated Religious Education and RHE sequences that explore diverse world-views. This is supported by our weekly assemblies, which strategically recognise and celebrate a wide range of global events and festivals, such as Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Navratri, and Diwali, alongside cultural events like European Languages Day. Through our structured critical thinking tools—including Perspective Glasses to explore how others see the world and the Opinion Continuum to debate issues respectfully—we teach children how to engage constructively with beliefs different from their own. This fosters an exceptional climate of tolerance and mutual understanding, ensuring all pupils grow into open-minded citizens ready to contribute positively to modern, multicultural Britain.
